We always hear about there being a lack of females within hip hop. I never agreed with that statement. I also never agreed with the “Femcee” label either… but that’s for another article. I never felt that statement before I got saved or even after I got saved. One of the emcees that proved this on the CHH side was Dice Gamble. I must have a “Truth Talk” moment and say that I was looking for Dice Raw when I happened to stumble upon Dice Gamble. I’m glad I “gambled” and found a “raw” artist. Raw is the feel that the viewer gets when they watch her “Jesus” video.
Not only does it give you a perfect boom bap sound, but gives you a rugged visual matched with the bars. I love how the video goes from black and white back to color. It helps push the hook of “being blind and now I see” flow. The way she was representing God and the culture of what CHH stands for, is phenomenal. It leaves you hungry for more of the presence of Jesus and more of her songs.
This song is pivotal in CHH history. First off, she kills the stereotype of lack of female artists. Secondly, she gives us a the fullness of “rawness.” She was raw with her lyrics, production and even the way of shooting the video. She keeps the focus on the subject. Lastly, Dice Gamble brings “Jesus” to the forefront. These are the things that make CHH what it is and I thank you for this classic gem. Spread The Soup!
