One of the most common questions one asks when starting their own business is, “When do I start charging for my services”? Some may think it’s a weird question because every business charges for their services, right? The reality is people want to know what they are purchasing. Physical items are a little easier to sell because people observe and sometimes test them on the spot. Services are much harder to sell without some kind of credibility behind you.
One of the best methods is to go around and ask people if you can perform your service for free. Free? Yes free! Think about music for a minute. If someone offers to mix or master some music for an artist for free, most of the time people will take that offer. As they do a few songs or an album free, they will have built up a loyal customer (artist) who appreciates the money they have saved. The artist will then recommend them to another artist for work.
Once you have some credibility, you can start charging for services. Deciding how much to charge varies based on quality, expertise, and the customers value of the service provided. The main thing to remember: just because you can do a task, doesn’t necessarily mean you will get paid for it starting off. You have to prove the value of something before people will be willing to pay for it.
