Isaiah 9:6-7: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
The word government is speaking to rule or dominion. The word government is always an intriguing word, and that’s true pretty much everywhere you go. Any country you go to, most people will have some thoughts and opinions on their government.
Every four years in the United States of America is a very interesting time, and this year has only amplified that fact. You get to know people a little bit more when election time rolls around. What people consider to be important really comes out. Election season has divided people and can further divide those who were already divided. However, it seems like everyone wants the same thing—they want right rule.
Everyone has different opinions on what right rule is, but they want right rule, normally according to their eyes and feelings. Desiring right rule is a good thing. I have been blessed to have good supervisors throughout my work history, no matter the job function. I have had someone who rules over me that I have considered to generally be a good person and acts towards me, at least most of the time, with my best interests at heart.
To be honest, whenever I am considering a new job, my prayer has been for GOD to place me under someone who will govern me well in my job duties. Desiring right rule is not a bad thing in a job opportunity or for an entire country.
1 Timothy 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior.
Praying for government officials is something that is good and pleasing to GOD. The reason for this prayer is for people to lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. Pray for right rule so that you can live peacefully and quietly. There is nothing wrong with that desire and therefore I can see how people can get so caught up in politics, especially every four years when the United States of America elects its Commander in Chief.
Everyone wants to elect someone that will benefit them. Maybe not benefit them to lead a quiet and peaceful life, a godly and dignified life, but definitely something that deals with their benefit and comfort.
So dear believers who are seeking right rule for the United States of America this year, what benefits are we praying for? Are we even praying?
Grace and peace.
