With this month being surrounded by Halloween and horror stories, I decided to do a series speaking on Horror stories with a twist on it. For the month of October, I will be interviewing different people of different positions within the CHH community to share a horror story that they survived and learned from. The purpose is to help encourage and/or educate those that may be dealing with the same thing.
For this week’s entry, we have Radio personality, Shine who hosts “The Drop Radio Show” on WUVS 103.7 The Beat and WJWC 97.3 The Beat in West Michigan. He’s been doing CHH radio for over a decade and I knew that he would have some type of horror story for me.
CG: So, Shine, have you ever had a horror story dealing with someone in the radio industry?
Shine: Yes. I have a lot! LOL! This is one that happens the most, but this particular story is going to be called “The opportunist.”
CG: Ok! Sounds interesting. Let me hear it.
Shine: My nightmare/story deals more with relationships and a mindset which still exist in the Body of Christ that shouldn’t. It’s the mindset of The Opportunists. In laymen terms an opportunist is on who will serve when the opportunity benefits him. For example: I had an Artist who only affiliates or work with more popular artists in order to make a name for themselves. I’ve actually watched this take place with an up and coming artist from my own home town who when was asked to do a smaller venue, complained about not being paid, how things were out-of-order, the distance he drove, etc… Yet when a more popular artist came to town he had no problems with the venue, pay, nor distance as long as he could be on the bill. We would cross paths occasionally and I’d reach out to this dude and he’d kinda give me the cold shoulder until he found out that I wrote for HolyCulture.net. I kid you not, he immediately inboxed me. I did the interview in hopes of maintaining a relationship seeing how we were from the same city, but it was more like a one night stand, wham, bam thank you, scram….lol.
CG: Wow! That’s funny and sad at the same time. I know that felt bad being used and you were only trying to help and glory God and shed light on the culture. So, what did you learn from it?
Shine: The one key lesson I learned out of this situation is don’t be bitter just “Know who you are, stay in your lane” The Radio show now airs here in our home town, so I know I’ll be hearing from this guy again soon. I forgive him and everything, because it happens all the time. Lol!
CG: So, brining it full circle, how do you feel God healed and helped you out of your hip hop horror story?
Shine: He dropped John 21:22 into my spirit and I truly began to live it. It says ” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” So now, I understand not just about the artists, but also for myself, not to follow opportunities… but to follow Christ.
I want to thank Shine for taking time to speak with me and I hope that you take away some things. If you’re an artist, make sure you don’t chase the quickest opportunity, but that you chase God and His plan for you. If you work in the radio field, don’t let bitterness overcome you from people who have a hidden agenda. This hip hop horror story has a happy ending now. Spread The Soup!
