I recently listened to the W.E. ARE EP by Wilfredo and Enkosé and all I can say is wow! What an amazing project! If you’re a true fan of hip-hop, rock, and soul then you should love this project! It was a complete body of work from top to bottom. I enjoyed every minute of it. Wilfredo and Enkosé did not disappoint me one bit. I listened to this project 6 or 7 times before I began to gather my thoughts. My process is always to listen for the beat, then listen out for the hook, and lastly the words. Each time I listen I get something new that I missed before.
We Are: (track 1) We Are is titled after the EP’s name, which I’m led to believe the W and E stand for Wilfredo and Enkosé. Which makes sense as to why it’s the first song on the project. I love the subtlety of the track when it first comes on and then Wilfredo reminds us that he is a true product of “authentic” hip hop. He brings enough bars to cover us all. There is so much truth in this song. I’m a true believer that if you listen to something long enough it begins to root itself in then bear fruit. Luckily we’re listening to the gospel and not the music that the enemy influences. For me, listening to this track became more of a praise and worship session. Before starting the track, I was in my devotion reading Galatians and it was a true confirmation of what I was hearing. Galatians 4:7 says “ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has also made you an heir”. Then immediately after I heard the song say “We are because He is” “We are chosen, we are forgiven, we are loved, we are His children, we are past, we are present, we are future, we are because He is.” What a powerful statement and testimony.
I Aint’ Nothing Play With: (track 2) Oh we got us an anthem right here! This was a fun one! It’s an anthem-style song. Every project needs one of these. Enkosé comes in before the track starts and it immediately gave me chills. You never want to play with a Christian on a mission. I particularly loved his cadence in his verse. I thought he brought the solid wordplay too. Then you let Wilfredo loose on verse two and it was over. The song was an absolute banger from start to finish! This one was one hit home for me. I was feeling it because it was so relatable to my life and the season of warfare that I’m currently up against. I was let job from my job last year and I could have ridden this track all the way home, and I would have felt better about the results. But as the song eludes, God’s children ain’t nothing to play with. Because I had kept all my receipts from my conversations with my manager, they let her go in the days to follow. The scripture says in Psalms 105:15 “Touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm”. Enkosé reminds us that although we think we’ve fallen, we’re really on top!
Spiritual Hoe: (track 3) This was a fun one! I could just imagine this song performed live. I could see the band with live instrumentation. I could hear the audience snapping to the beat and two-stepping to hook and the bridge. I thought because of the controversial nature of the title that this was going to be my favorite song. I mean once I glanced at the title my curiosity was piqued. I didn’t know where we were going with “Spiritual Hoe” as a title. I just knew it probably wasn’t something I wanted anyone to hear me mumbling without being able to explain it, lol… I remember thinking to myself “This probably won’t go over well as a radio submission either”. But in totality, it’s probably the song that needs to be aired the most. After listening to the song the first time, I took an immediate pause to see if I was coming to God in this season out of need. If I’m being honest, probably so. This is the most intimate I’ve been with Father in quite some time. I always thought living right was getting me by and helping me to avoid trouble. This is a song that we as believers need to use as an accountability tool. It’s a real heart check and a look in the mirror.
Silver Lining: (track 4) Are you kidding me? Did we just get pure rock and roll on this track? Yes, we did and I loved it! This was by far my favorite track because I wasn’t expecting it. But man what a treat! I loved the mean guitar riffs and the heart-pounding drums. I enjoyed the vibe of the song. It was a pure worship medley. It showed the versatility of the project and the artists and what they are capable of. If I’m sharing a hidden secret I’ve been a closet fan of rock for quite some time. It dates back to MTV’s TRL show. There were certain artists and bands that I liked such as Lenny Kravitz, Third Eye Blind, Three Doors Down, and Creed. However, I never listened to full projects just certain songs in pop culture.
Overall, I thought this was a stellar project from start to finish. I could hardly believe it was just four songs. It honestly wasn’t enough for me. They could have thrown 3 or 4 more songs on here and I would have been even more satisfied. My ask of you is that you listen to the EP for yourself, revisit my thoughts and opinions, and make your own assessment.
