The original purpose of music was to glorify God.
Job 38:7 tells us, “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? [KJV]” Signifying authority in the art form from the beginning: music was intertwined with creation itself.
However, as God spoke through the prophet Ezekiel, He described the devil’s original design, and ultimately what led to Satan’s conversion of music in Ezekiel chapter 28:13 saying, “…the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the sat that thou wast created. [KJV]”
In the following verses, Ezekiel explains that the devil was created as a masterpiece with instruments built in him that was made to exalt the Lord. Yet, his pride in his gift and own ways lead to his rebellion, and eventually his demise.
So even though he fell, he still possesses those musical capabilities, but uses them to deceive rather than worship. Despite this, there are those who still use music for its intended purpose, but there is now a constant war between good and evil.
And in this war, there are spirits behind music that we often, unknowingly, open ourselves up to.
An example of this in practical terms is portrayed through the life of Saul. When he was tormented by an oppressive spirit, David’s harp brought him relief.
1 Samuel 16:23 says that when David played, it ceased Saul’s discomfort, refreshing him, and the evil spirit departed from Saul. Because of the power that the Lord has granted his people, that anointing rested on David, and was exuded when he played.
In contrast, in Daniel chapter 3 King Nebuchadnezzar utilized music as a manipulative tactic that orchestrated the masses to worship a false god.
So if music can carry the presence of God, what kind of presence is invited when the one creating it is not aligned with him?
As shown in Daniel, the heart of an artist has the ability to alter the spirit of a song. As Jesus says in Matthew 12:34-35, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. [KJV]” What is in an individual’s heart will be conveyed in conversation, and even in music.
Jesus talks about how those who are consecrated are the light of the world. That light should be manifested in every action. Therefore, when a frequency is granted into the hands of those who are set apart, you feel the anointing and presence of God being invited through the music, and into your soul.
As believers, you must remember that the devil is like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. And as these days are wrapping up quickly, he is on his mission more than ever.
Tiktoks and youtube videos always have trending sounds to increase monetization. Retail stores and restaurants play popular music for a better shopping and dining experience.
The point is, this is something that has been embedded into our lifestyles. You can close your eyes, you can shut your mouth, but your ears are always listening.
I am not saying be paranoid, I am saying be “sober and vigilant’’.
As we are temples for Christ, we must have discernment and check the fruit of the people we are quite literally opening our spirit to, and what we are allowing our conscience to consume.
So be mindful of what you allow to minister to you. Let the music you choose become an altar.
Choose songs that strengthen your walk, that align with heaven, that draw your heart to the One who created the music in the first place.
