This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Christian Hip Hop Artist, Edify. In our conversation, we discussed his latest single, “Goliath”. The song is a joint collaboration between Edify and Tds Cam. The song’s theme suggests what most might think, which is the story and theme of King David and how he overcame and triumphed over Goliath.
When the song first came on I immediately began to nod my head. The beat captured me! And let me tell you, Edify brought the bars in immediately. He’s quickly becoming a fan favorite of mine. What you’ll notice first about the song is how well it’s sonically put together. You can tell the selection of the beat was intentional. What I think makes for a great song is the complementation of the artists and the beat. In this case that panned out to be true for Edify’s voice and vocals complementing Tds Cam’s and vice versa. The hook is an immediate attention-grabber. I’ll describe it to you this way. Remember when we had brick-and-mortar bookstores and there were so many options that you didn’t know where to begin? If you didn’t know what you wanted to read you could flip open the book jacket and read the summary from the author and make an instant decision. That’s how I felt when I saw the cover art, clicked on the Spotify link, and the beat dropped. I knew instantly it was a song I wanted to finish. I was fully committed, the melodic intro had drawn me in.
The instrumentation was probably my favorite part of the song to dissect. The production was a blend of instrumentation from what sounded like a piccolo all the way to a guitar solo by Tds Cam, and it blended perfectly with the beat. The following is an except from the official press release. I wanted to include it in this review so that song was given a proper conveying from the words of the artists.
“Goliath is a song about the antagonist of David, slayed with a sling and stone. The contrast from Bible character to real life application is found in defeating the giants in our own circumstance through faith. Tds Cam and Edify collab on an energetic CHH record after connecting through Rapzilla’s “Critique Fridays”. Edify leads with impactful lyricism and harmonic singing. Followed by Tds Cam’s unique sonic vocals and guitar solo.”
