“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

I had a great opportunity to go see one of my favorite artists live this week. Maybe some of you are familiar with Avery*Sunshine. I like to call her a hybrid artist. She’s an r&b singer but when you see her live, there is definitely a strong spiritual aspect to her performance. I don’t just mean a casual “I want to thank God tonight” type of thing. She really goes into how she is who she is because of what God has done in her life.

How about we broke out into an a capella chorus of the whole audience singing “I Surrender All.” Such a beautiful moment of worship. She has recorded gospel songs on her albums, but things like this give you a glimpse of how real God is to her and it comes out through her music. Her songs are usually about different aspects of relationships. From the lovey dovey stuff , heartbreak, when folks just get on your nerves or when you’re trippin. All different aspects of life.

This is our life. Many different facets. We don’t spend 24/7 in church or singing praise songs to God. One day we may be in worship. Another day we’re struggling with the everyday issues of life. We’re no less Christian from one instance to the other. It’s all apart of this thing we call life. God guides us through it all. We’re not compartmentalized and God is boxed over in one corner of our lives. He desires to be apart of every aspect of our lives. In this He takes the good and broken pieces of our lives and uses them to make beautiful music.

Our lives are like a song. There are high notes and low notes. Sharp keys and flat ones. Alone they can be really good or really bad, but when ordered together, it can make for beautiful music. God is our mighty composer. You can have a dark spot and God adds a couple of notes of light and makes a beautiful D chord. Maybe you have a couple of dark places. God adds a little light and makes an Eb (E flat) chord. You think it’s all dark, He’ll make an F# (F sharp).

God wants to make a song out of your life that gives Him glory and shows the world what He can do when you let Him be the composer of your life.

This leads us into our Throwback Song of the Week. It is from a hip hop compilation album released in 2003. It’s entitled “Night Owls 2: Sleep Therapy.” The featured track is called “Black Keys & Ivory” by a rapper named Wordz. A fitting name for him as this song shows how he is able to weave words together to paint a picture of how life is like music. Check out the song and let us know what you think. Until next time…

Peace and blessings.
