One of the things we Christians really harp on is going to church. You gotta go to church, you just gotta. However, in this day and time, many people are beginning to wonder why do they even need to go to church? What’s the point? Going to a place that seems so outdated and close minded in 2017 seems like a waste of time. Maybe the people who are thinking and saying things like that have a point, why do we have to go to church? There are numerous reasons, however I’d like to give you the reader five reasons you should not go to church.
Because it is expected. You should not be going to church purely out of obligation. The church isn’t a building, it is a living breathing organism spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ across the globe. Every saint is vital, yes even you. Many complain that they don’t get much out of church gatherings, but maybe there’s a reason for that. If you aren’t there for the right reason or correct mindset, then you definitely won’t get what you desire. Work on killing that part of you that treats church attendance like a job, because newsflash- in Heaven it’s going to be one gathering for all of eternity.
If you are expecting an immediate life change. If we are honest, many of us only run to God when He’s our last hope. After we’ve tried everything else, then maybe it’s time to trust God and see what He can do for us. It’s funny and scary how arrogant we humans can be. If you listen to the testimonies of some saints, their mind and habits change almost instantly… but for the rest of us, it doesn’t work that way. The rest of us have to go through the painful process of laying our lives and even our desires down before the Lord. God is a sovereign God and He is not bound to the constraints of time as we are. God works when He wants to, it’s no use trying to rush Him to do anything. Stay home if you want your whole life to change overnight after visiting the church.
If you are always looking to get something. We live in a consumer driven society where everything is all about how to get something faster and spending less money, if any at all. We’ve taken this same mentality and applied to God, but it just doesn’t work. The scriptures made it clear that the body of believers were to give of their time, talents, and treasures for the building of the kingdom and not personal gain. As a matter of fact, a couple of people died because they sold their land, made money, and held some of it back from the church. The life of a Believer is to be given away not hoarded.
If you want to cause confusion. Believe it or not, some people are a part of the gathering of Believers for no other reason to cause confusion. We all know people who almost live off of and thrive off of chaos and strife. Unsurprisingly, these people also attend church, and with social media giving everyone a voice, the division is at an all time high. I’ve seen a small Baptist church become divided, lose members, people almost got in fights, all because of a husband and wife who joined the church. People like that are not of God, they are agents of the evil one. If that’s you, please stay your butt at home.
If you are looking for perfect people. This may be the biggest reason yet to attend Bedside Baptist. People say they are turned off by the church because there are hypocrites in the church, as if they are perfect as if a perfect person exists. I think many times people use it as an excuse or out to leave the faith because they never really wanted to change in the first place. Don’t be fooled, the pious uppity Christian is just as flawed and broken as the new Christian and a person who doesn’t believe. A quote said “ The church is not a museum of saints, but a hospital for the sick.” If you plan on attending a church gathering, you would do well to remember that.
