First things first: Listen to Dre Murray’s latest project Dark Vader. If you haven’t listened to Dre Murray at all, I feel like I have the right to ask just what exactly have you been doing with your life. lol Dre is looked at as an OG in the sub-genre that is Christian Hip Hop. His catalog and the number of feature verses he is on, is nothing short of monstrous. This latest project Dre gave us more of himself and his story than ever before. One song that stood out to me from the title alone was “We was Rich til the Bill Came.”
That title alone says so much about life and reality in itself. I’m sure we’ve all had that moment where we may have just made a little money and wanted to spend it. You feel like you balling out of control until it’s time to pay what you owe. As a fully functioning adult you probably experience this either once a week or once every two weeks. We’ve even seen some celebrities who looked like they were rich with cars and other possessions until the script flipped. We’ve seen high profile entertainers go broke and have their items repossessed from spending money they hadn’t earned yet or just plain old negligence to their finances. We all think that we can postpone our debts to life but we forget that eventually we will have to pay, be it in one way or another. We will always pay.
When I first saw this title in my mind’s eye I saw a table full of young African American men. They were in some swanky restaurant with glasses and bottles of champagne, being loud, celebrating their success, looking just happy that life seems to be going their way. Everything was going great until the waiter came and handed them the bill. In my mind, I could hear a needle scratch and everything came to a screeching halt. These young brothers looked at the bill wide eyed unable to comprehend how this could have happened, simultaneously processing that they had nothing that could even come close to paying off this bill in full. This happens to many people on a daily basis in the spiritual realm. We live life anyway we want to and think nothing of the consequences. Some make attempts at being “a good person” but Christians know that good isn’t good enough. When we take our last breath that’s when we have to make our final payment. For those who believe in Jesus, the bill will have already been paid, processed, and approved. For those who trusted in themselves or some other way than the Way, they have to pay for this bill for all of eternity. We can put this bill on forbearance or try and defer but unfortunately we all will have to pay. You can scam and run game on some people and even government agencies can be fooled for a time, but you can’t fool the Lord our God. It’s all fun and games but in the words of Dre Murray “We was Rich til the bill came!”
