This is a new series in which I will be discussing how a Christian’s appearance (aka “Church Clothes“) should look like outside of the four walls of the church.
In general, we live in a very rushed and goal driven society. With an economy where many people live paycheck to paycheck and ever evolving technology, it seems as though everyone is always busy doing something. It seems as though our goals in life are to either find happiness, obtain material stuff or status. This is why it is so important for us to have an active prayer life. Many of us pray, but usually we pray after things have happened and/or when we are in need. This determines if we use God as our Joy or Janitor when it comes to our prayer life.
Joy is defined as “a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.” As believers, we must allow people to see that we get our joy from God and not from the pleasures of the world. When we go to God for our Joy through our prayer life, we are following scripture. Proverbs 10:28 tells us that “the prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.” This verse let’s us know that our success as believers comes from seeking God and if our hope and faith is within other things… nothing will come of it.
Many of us treat God as a janitor. This means we only go to Him when we need Him to fix or clean something up that we did. This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t go to God when trials come our way, but if we are only using Him when trials come around, then we are not exercising a healthy prayer life.
So, what does this have to do with your “Church Clothes?” When we have an active prayer life, we can reflect the joy we receive in our daily lives. Those that are trying to find joy in other things, will notice something different about your attitude and actions. If we only go to God as our Janitor, then it looks as though our decisions and priorities are motivated by our busy schedules and emotions. It makes our witness look like we are saying to only try God at circumstances and at our own convenience. We must take the time out of our schedule to wear prayer. Spread The Soup!
