Super Bowl Sunday is the one time I look forward to television advertisements. On average it cost around 4.5 million dollars for a 30 second spot on air. Advertisers pay for the show to go on most of the time. Sponsors will pay someone money if they believe in what they are doing or are great at what they do for mentioning their company. Athletes will drink certain beverages during live events because they are sponsored by those companies. A lot of the media we enjoy watching or listening to is made possible because of advertisers. I say that to say this, we need more Christians who are capable of being advertisers.
We need this on television shows, public radio stations, and even live events. Advertisers have the biggest power of influence over almost anything else. Sponsors pay people’s salary. Back in 2011 there was an MTV show that aired called “Skins.” It lasted one season and one of those reason was due to big sponsors like Taco Bell, GM, and Wrigley pulling their support. They saw that this show was not good for its viewers and pulled their funding and support for the show. MTV stated other reasons that the show did not continue, but Im pretty sure the pulling out of sponsorship is the biggest reason. Advertisers get to make certain demands of who they are backing, which often includes how far entertainment can go in their content.
This is why there should be more Christians in the business realm with that kind of capital to back up companies or creatives that they believe are doing an important work. A lot of social events that are free to the public are so because of the sponsorships. We need to have more of a power behind the scenes to influence our communities and culture as a whole. So go out and be that change in our culture. Not only the change that everyone can see, but also the change behind the scenes as well. God Bless.
