Do I Need A College Degree? |Bordeaux’s Business Blog| (@trackstarz @jasonbordeaux1)

I am a huge believer in getting educated and going to college. I am also a huge believer in people paying for what they need. A college degree is only worth the knowledge gained while getting it. Many people get a degree in a field that is so specialized, many jobs aren’t  available to them when they graduate. When thinking about college, a person needs to know what they are buying. Why are they buying it and will they make a return on investment? I think the society we live in is so big on pushing people to go to college and forget to tell them the important factors involved.  You can look up the outlook for any job field on the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.org) to see what your future job looks like in the next 5-10 years. A lot of high paying jobs are being cut down due to regulations, the rise of other jobs replacing it, or the needs for it being reduced.

I recommend people to learn as much as they can  on their own time with as many free resources made available. Reading books and listening to podcasts are my two favorite ways of learning. Podcasts are free and available to almost anyone who has a smart device or access to a computer. Books are usually free to borrow from your local library. I buy books at thrift stores even if I do not have time to read them yet, because normally they are extremely cheap. I have bought some books from book stores when I really anticipated reading them and didn’t want to wait. These are two ways of learning that doesn’t cost you student loan debt. In all honesty, you will probably learn more of what you directly need to know for what you plan on doing.

The trick is to find what you love doing and more importantly what you are called by God to do. Find the need for it and find a way to monetize it so that you may take care of your family. If you are still wondering what you should pursue as a career, then you may want to go out and work a little to try and find your calling. You don’t have to start getting a degree right after high school, even though it’s better the sooner you find that calling. Can you learn how to pursue that calling without college and if so go after it that way? If not, then work hard to get into college and learn as much as you can while you are there. The degree will not get you the job. It is based on your knowledge of how to perform what is needed from you.
