I remember not being into the hard/hood bar rappers growing up, because I “wasn’t bout that life” growing up. There were only a few of those artists that really spoke to me, as I listened to hip hop. The same applied with CHH as well. It was hard for me to listen to some of the artists, because I didn’t share their testimony. One of those artists that was able to deliver his testimony passionately through their lyrics to me was This’l.
The defining moment where I truly became a This’l fan was with his “I hate You” video. It was unique for a couple of reasons. First, it was a “raw” video of the effects of drugs coming from a CHH artist. Many artists spoke on the subject, but no one truly showed it as vivid as this video. The video became a “glancer enhancer” for the lyrics and put the seriousness of the issue in your face. Second, the video was on Worldstar Hip Hop. In a world/site of violence, sex and peril…. this video was a light on the site.
Overall, this video was a huge influence in CHH history. It showed the world that CHH could be real, raw and relevant to universal issues. This will go down as one of my favorite videos of all time. This’l hates drugs and I love him for that. Spread The Soup!
