Within the entertainment industry, interviews are an essential part of the business. As someone watches the interview, they can learn a lot about the person being interviewed or the person that is actually doing the interview. Sometimes, you can see powerful and insightful interviews and sometimes you can see interviews end in disbelief and confusion. It seems like the latter happened with Birdman with his interview on The Breakfast Club. Due to the language, I won’t be posting the interview here, but I can assure you that it was a 2 minute train wreck. Even though he has come back and apologized for his behavior and asks to come back to the show, I learned a lot from his actions. Here are three things we need to take from the “Respeck” interview:
1. All people have feelings regardless of their status. Birdman has been reported to have been worth at least 170 million dollars. He has managed one of the biggest labels within music with Cash Money and has also been nominated for awards through his music. With all those accolades, he was still hurt from someone talking about him. Think about how our words may affect someone who doesn’t even have half of what he has?
2. Conflict doesn’t have to lead to confusion. Usually people think that the word “conflict” always deals with something negative. However, when done properly, conflict can lead to conclusions and solutions. This wasn’t the case for Birdman. Remember that your conflict should always lead to a conclusion and not confusion.
3. We should be quick to listen and slow to speak. When someone comes at you in frustrated at something you have done, you should be willing to listen to their concerns. If you continue to talk or try to irritate them more, you will never get results to the problem.
At the end of the day, we have all been in the shoes of Birdman. We have been talked about, gossiped on, been the joke of the day and been hurt from people’s words. And many of us have been on the other side and have caused those feelings upon others. As you read this, have a Mirror Moment with yourself and see are you giving people around you respect or respeck, because only one of them is acceptable for others and yourself. Spread The Soup!
