“The Day After” Album Review|Throwback Theology|@lilraskull @chicangeorge @trackstarz

In the early 2000s, the south was beginning to take over hip hop. Not only was there more southern artist grinding in the clubs, but they were grinding in the churches for God as well. That was around the time where I was starting listening to more of Houston/Texas artists. I remember seeing and hearing Lil Raskull’sThe day after” album before I was even really stepping into my walk with God. I respected him, because I loved how he still represented Christ, while also representing being from “Down South“. That was one of the songs that really stuck out to me when I first listened to the album. “What would it take?” was also another great listen from the album. Lil Raskull really flowed on this track and told us a great story of real life grace and repentance. “Have you any love for me?” was my favorite track off of the entire project. Not only did it have the best beat on the album, but it also combined a serious subject brought to the listeners with a fun feel.

Overall, this album will always be remembered as a “in your face” with the gospel listen. Even though by today’s standards/ears, the production wouldn’t be the greatest, Lil Raskull’s flow and lyrics are tight and eye opening for any listener. At the time (and even now), I will always remember Lil Raskull’s flow and energy he brought on that album. At the end of the day, “The day after” deserves a listen and will help you appreciate where southern CHH artists were coming from and how the gritty street storytelling skills were always there in the genre.
