KJ-52 is a huge name within CHH culture. He has been consistently making hits and receiving rewards since the early 2000s. With that, I believe he also holds one of the most defining and controversial moments within CHH history. It comes from his single “Dear Slim” on his “Collaborations” album. Within the song, KJ-52 writes a letter to Eminem (aka “Slim Shady”) to talk to him about his influence on people with his music and to share the Gospel. This is so important on so many levels. At the time, people were comparing KJ-52 to Eminem. At this time, I would like to make a side note and a shameless plug– Whether you agree or disagree with our Line 4 Line segment, fans of hip hop will always compare secular and Christian artists. This helps their transition within their faith walk a little easier. Also, hip hop fans love to debate who is better…period. Anyways, the thing that really sticks out about this song is KJ-52’s approach. He wrote the song as a fan of Eminem and hip hop, but also as a concerned Christian/big brother.
The video reflects this with the light color and tones, as well as seeing KJ-52 writing his letter/lyrics. Many of Eminem fans (as well as CHH fans) criticized this song/video and some even sent him death threats! With all of that, not only did Eminem respond to KJ-52 on “Careful what you wish for”, but it has been said that the song helped him to accept Christ.
“Dear Slim” shows the importance of the Gospel within music and shows the true example of evangelism. KJ-52 showed us to have a heart for those that many would say “don’t deserve God.” He crossed enemy lines and came back with a friend. This was a letter worth writing. Spread The Soup!
